Kilns, weavers, breweries, blacksmiths, small local workshops — we have gathered the makers of each region. Large mass-production factories, power plants and dams, public research institutes and museums are not shown here (you can find them in the full list of entries).

Lacquerwork & nationally designated craft
The Shunkei lacquerware of Takayama. Transparent lacquer is applied thinly to show the wood grain. It calls for a wooden base prepared so that no joints show.

The Ichii ittobori carving of Takayama. Japanese yew is carved and finished without coloring, using only the differences in the color of the wood.

Mino ware of the Tono area. It gave rise to the Momoyama tea wares of Shino, Oribe, Ki-Seto and Seto-guro, and still makes most of Japan's tableware today.

The washi of Mino. It has a history of 1,300 years and is known for the technique of forming thin, even sheets.

The lanterns of Gifu. Flowers and grasses are painted on thin Mino washi, and the lanterns are made with fine bamboo strips. They are used as Bon lanterns.

The Japanese umbrellas of Gifu. Mino washi is pasted onto bamboo ribs and coated with oil. Gifu makes most of the Japanese umbrellas in the country.

The Shino ware of Kani. A white feldspar glaze is applied thickly, bringing out a fire color and pinholes.

The Oribe ware of Tajimi. A copper green glaze is applied, and distorted forms are valued.
