About this place
Gojo Shinmachi is the name of an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings located around Gojo Shinmachi-dori (Ise Kaido) in Gojo, Nara Prefecture. It originates from a castle town in which, in Keicho 13 (1608), Shigemasa Matsukura, a retainer of the Tsutsui clan, was enfeoffed as lord of Futami Castle and ruled Gojo and Sue, and developed as a town the Shinmachi Village formed between Gojo and Futami. Shinmachi Village consisted of Higashi, Naka and Nishi-machi, and in Genna 9 (1623) there were about 95 houses, forming a townscape not much different from the present about 110.
