About this place
Echizen Uchihamono is cutlery produced in Echizen, Fukui Prefecture. It is designated a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. It is said to have begun in 1337 (Nanbokucho period), when the Kyoto sword smith of the Rai school, Chiyozuru Kuniyasu, sought a place suited to sword making and came to Fuchu (now Echizen), where, alongside making swords, he made sickles for farmers in nearby villages. In the Edo period, under the protective policies of the Fukui Domain, a blacksmith quarter and wholesale district were developed and a trade guild was organized, and it developed as a local industry.
