Recorded in 8th-century documents; a handful of workshops still make it.
About this place
Bitchu washi is washi made in Kurashiki, Okayama Prefecture. Around the year 800, papermaking techniques were brought from Nara, and as demand grew, Bitchu Province became a major washi-producing area, and its prosperity lasted until the Edo period. Production gradually declined in the Meiji era, but production of Seigo-uchigami, its source, continued along the Nariwa River in the former Bitchu Town (now Bitchu-cho, Takahashi, Okayama Prefecture).
