About this place
The Johana Hikiyama Festival is the spring festival of Johana Shinmeigu Shrine held every year on 5 May in the Johana area of Nanto, Toyama Prefecture. It is a hikiyama Shinto ritual in which splendid floats carrying sacred images and iori yatai floats parade through the town. It was established in the early Kyoho era of the Edo period (1710s) and has been held every May as a spring festival since the Meiji era. A preliminary evening festival is held on the night of 4 May. It used to be held on 15 May, but since 2006 it has been held during Golden Week as at present, to secure enough people to conduct the festival.
