Overview
A line of rocks said to be what remains of Kobo Daishi's attempt to build a bridge in one night.
About this place
Hashigui-iwa is a group of strange rock formations in Kushimoto, Higashimuro District, Wakayama Prefecture. From the coast at Hashigui, in Kujinokawa in the town, toward Kii Oshima, about 40 rocks of various sizes stand in a single continuous line over about 850 meters from north-northwest to south-southeast. The rocks standing in a straight line look like bridge piles, hence the name Hashigui-iwa (Bridge Pile Rocks). At low tide you can also walk across to Benten Island, attached near the middle of the row of rocks.
