About this place
Echigo-Yuzawa Onsen is a hot spring in Yuzawa, Minamiuonuma District, Niigata Prefecture (formerly Echigo Province). It is the hot spring town that was the model for Kawabata Yasunari's novel 'Snow Country'. It is sometimes simply called Yuzawa Onsen. As treated in this entry, the name is also used for the other hot springs in the same town of Yuzawa. There are several source wells of different spring types, including weakly alkaline, hypotonic, high-temperature simple springs, sulphur springs and chloride springs. The following eight sources are centrally managed.
