Overview
Kakunodate's oldest samurai house, still lived in by the family, with a tortoise carved into the transom.
About this place
The Ishiguro House is one of the samurai residences on the so-called "Samurai Residence Street" in Kakunodate, Semboku, Akita Prefecture. It is designated a historic site of Semboku City. The 6.9 hectares around the Ishiguro House retain the Edo-period townscape and old building styles of a samurai town so well that in 1976 they were selected, along with places such as Tsumago-juku in Nagano Prefecture and Sannenzaka in Kyoto, as the first Important Preservation Districts for Groups of Traditional Buildings in Japan.
