About this place
Katsuhira Tokushi (April 6, 1904 - January 4, 1971) was a printmaker born in Honmachi (now Omachi), Akita, Akita Prefecture. His real name was Katsuhira Tokuji. While drawing alongside the family businesses of papermaking and plastering, he was attracted by the pictures of Takehisa Yumeji and began making ukiyo-e prints. At this time he studied colour printing and in 1928 perfected his own colour-stencil method of drawing, carving and printing by himself. From then on he continued to depict scenes of his native Akita. In 1929 his 'Night View of the Outer Moat' and 'Yabase Kaido' were accepted into the Japan Print Association exhibition.
