Once a lagoon rivalling Matsushima; an earthquake raised it, leaving islets stranded in rice fields.
About this place
Kanmanji is a Soto-sect temple in Nikaho, Akita Prefecture. Its mountain name is Kokyuzan and its principal image is Shakamuni Buddha. It is known as a famous temple visited by literati since ancient times, and in 1689 (Genroku 2) Matsuo Basho visited it and introduced it in 'Oku no Hosomichi'. It is said to have been founded in 853 (Ninju 3) by Ennin (Jikaku Daishi), head of the Tendai sect. Because of the beautiful scenery of Kisakata and the legend of Empress Jingu, the place was divined by feng shui and so on, and is said to have been named Kokozan Kanmanju-ji.
