About this place
Naraoka ware is pottery fired in the Nangai area of Daisen, Akita Prefecture. It is known for the vivid colour given by its distinctive ultramarine namako glaze. Naraoka ware began in 1863 (Bunkyu 3) when Komatsu Seiji, of an old local family, invited a potter from Terauchi ware of Akita city (a recent study has raised the theory that the potter came from Soma ware) to build a kiln (there is also a theory of 1867 (Keio 3)).
