About this place
Akita cedar tubs and barrels are a traditional woodworking craft produced mainly in Noshiro and Odate, Akita Prefecture. They were designated a Traditional Craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in May 1984. They are tubs and barrels made by hand by craftsmen from Akita cedar. Tubs use straight-grain material, and madake bamboo, copper and brass are used for the hoops. Barrels mainly use flat-grain material and refer to those with lids.
