About this place
Echizen Tansu is traditional craft chests of drawers produced in Echizen and Sabae, Fukui Prefecture. It is one of the Echizen Sashimono crafts. It is designated a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry. It is said to have begun in the late Edo period in what is now Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, made by cabinetmakers who frequented the houses of wealthy patrons. Craftsmen such as cabinetmakers and lacquerers gathered on the "Tansu-machi Street" that still exists in Echizen, and in the Showa period it was crowded with customers buying wedding furniture.
