Held to be Japan's oldest paper district, and the only one with a shrine to the deity of paper itself.
About this place
Echizen washi is Japanese paper made in the Imadate district (the former town of Imadate) of Echizen, Fukui Prefecture. It continues to be produced as Japan's number one washi-producing region in quality, variety and quantity. Echizen hosho and Echizen torinoko paper are designated Important Intangible Cultural Properties of Japan. In addition, on 11 December 2025 (Reiwa 7), Echizen torinoko paper was added to the UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage inscription "Washi."
