About this place
Imajo-juku was a post town on the Hokurikudo (Hokkoku Kaido) in Nanjo District, Echizen Province, and is now in Minamiechizen, Fukui Prefecture. In August 2021 it was selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings under the name Minamiechizen Imajo-juku Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. Imajo stands with layered mountains behind it, at the gateway from the capital Kyoto to the Hokuriku region, backed by the most difficult stretch in Hokuriku, so it has long been a key point of transport, and in the Edo period it flourished as one of Echizen's leading post towns for the alternate-attendance system.
