Overview
Agate heated until its colour changes, then carved and polished - a technique surviving only here.
About this place
Wakasa Agate Craft is a craft made by processing raw agate stones, produced in Obama, Fukui Prefecture. On June 2, 1976 (Showa 51), it was designated a traditional craft. Accessories, ornaments, tea bowls, scroll weights (fuchin) and distinctive animal-shaped works are still handed down today. It is said to have begun in the Nara period, when the Wani clan, immigrants who venerated jewels, took up the work of making jewels in front of the Wakasa Ichinomiya shrine.
