About this place
Obama Nishigumi is the common name of the Obama City Obama Nishigumi Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in the west of Obama, Fukui Prefecture. It is a townscape spread across the western part of Obama, Fukui Prefecture, centered on the Tango Kaido and made up of a merchant quarter, a teahouse quarter and a temple quarter. It was selected on June 9, 2008 (Heisei 20) as it retains well the streets and lot divisions of an early modern castle town. Obama Nishigumi lies west of the Obama city center, between Obama Bay and Mount Nochise. The east side of Nishigumi was developed as a merchant quarter, the west side as a teahouse quarter, and the west end and southern foothills as a temple quarter.
