Overview
The heart of the Kawada lacquer district, where each divided stage can be watched in the workshops next door.
About this place
Echizen lacquerware is lacquerware produced mainly in the Kawada district of Sabae, Fukui Prefecture. It is a traditional industry, and is also called "Kawada-nuri" after the name of the central area where nearly 400 lacquerware-related companies and workshops are concentrated. In the latter half of the 20th century, the establishment of coating techniques for new materials resistant to heat and water led it to hold an 80 percent share of commercial lacquerware in Japan, and along with eyeglasses and textiles it is counted as one of the three great local industries of Sabae. It is designated a Traditional Craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry.
