About this place
Wakasa-nuri is lacquerware produced in Obama, Fukui Prefecture. In the Kan'ei era (1624-1644) at the beginning of the Edo period, Kumiya Rokuzaemon, a wealthy merchant of Obama, presented a lacquered tray obtained from abroad to Sakai Tadakatsu, lord of the Obama Domain. Later, Matsuura Sanjuro (Yohei), a lacquer craftsman of the Obama Domain, made a design patterned on the seabed of Obama Bay and, based on Chinese lacquerware making, devised "Kikujin-nuri," which is said to be the first. Later, "Isokusa-nuri" was developed by his disciples.
