About this place
Chikugo Yoshii is a Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in the former Yoshii Town, Ukiha, Fukuoka Prefecture. It is known for its townscape of white-walled storehouse buildings. In 1996 it was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings under the name "Yoshii Town Chikugo Yoshii Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings" (the district name was changed to "Ukiha Chikugo Yoshii Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings" in 2005). Because of three great fires, merchant houses with highly fire-resistant storehouses were built in the Meiji era, and 162 remain designated as preserved properties today.
