About this place

Taimatsu Akashi is a fire festival that has continued for 430 years in Sukagawa, Fukushima Prefecture. It is sometimes counted as one of the Three Great Fire Festivals of Japan. It is held every year on the second Saturday of November. In 1589 (17th year of Tensho), Date Masamune extended his power around Iwase District and pressed the Nikaido clan of Sukagawa Castle to surrender. Enraged, retainers and local people gathered on the night of October 10 at Tokayama, east of the town, with torches in hand, resolved with desperate determination to defend the castle, and put this to the castle lord, Daijoin. This story is the origin of the festival.
