Overview
Dyed in live indigo vats without chemicals, then rinsed in the winter river - a sight the town turns out for.
About this place
Gujo honzome is dyeing handed down in Hachiman-cho, Gujo, Gifu Prefecture. Characterised by tsutsugaki indigo dyeing, a kind of indigo dyeing, and the dyeing of banners such as carp streamers, it has been handed down since the Tensho era. One of the traditional crafts of Gifu, it was designated an Important Intangible Cultural Property of Gifu Prefecture in 1977. The "carp streamer cold-water rinsing" held every year around Daikan (the coldest period) in the Yoshida River (a tributary of the Nagara River) is a winter feature. On 30 March 1992 it was designated a local craft of Gifu Prefecture.
