Carved from yew and never painted, so the wood's red and white heartwood does the work and deepens with age.
About this place
Ichii Itto-bori (Ichii itto Carvings - Yew Wood Carvings) is a woodwork produced in the Hida region of Gifu Prefecture. Its main production area is Takayama. It is also produced in Hida and Gero. It is also called Hida Ichii Itto-bori. It is said to have begun in the Edo period (early 19th century), when Matsuda Ryocho, a netsuke carver of Hida Province, made netsuke that used the grain of yew wood. In 1975 (Showa 50), it was designated a traditional craft by the Ministry of International Trade and Industry.
