About this place
The Kamioka Mine is a zinc, lead, silver and limestone mine in Hida, Gifu Prefecture (formerly Kamioka Town, Yoshiki District). Mining of zinc, lead and silver ended in June 2001 (Heisei 13). Mining had already begun in the Yoro era of the Nara period (around 720), and in 1874 (Meiji 7) the Mitsui group acquired management rights; with modernization it continued large-scale mining, including adopting Japan's first trackless mining method.
