Overview
Clear lacquer that reveals rather than hides the grain, so choosing the wood decides the finished piece.
About this place
Hida Shunkei is Shunkei-nuri lacquerware made in Takayama, Hida and other places in Gifu Prefecture. On February 17, 1975 (Showa 50), it was designated a traditional craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. It is a collaborative art combining the skills of two kinds of craftsmen: the woodworker (kijishi), who makes the wooden base using the beautiful grain of natural wood, and the lacquerer (nushi), who applies lacquer to bring out the character of that base. It excels in the "magemono" technique of shaping boards from flat to three-dimensional forms, and in the "suki-urushi" (transparent lacquer) technique that shows off the beauty of the grain.
