Overview
Paper is still made in midwinter, when cold water makes the fibres bind best.
About this place
Nishinouchi paper is washi produced in the former Yamagata town area of Hitachiomiya, Ibaraki Prefecture. It is made from kozo alone, and is distinctive in not using mitsumata, gampi or similar fibres. In the Edo period it became the foremost speciality of the Mito domain and was widely used in many fields. Because of its strength and excellent durability, merchants in Edo used it for their account books (daifukucho).
