Japan's only museum of seal carving - an art that sits between calligraphy and sculpture.
About this place
The Tenkoku Museum is an art museum in Koga, Ibaraki Prefecture. It opened in March 1991 (Heisei 3) as the first and only specialized art museum in Japan introducing the appeal of tenkoku (seal carving). The building is a renovated merchant's stone storehouse built in 1920 (Taisho 9). Tenkoku developed from seals and began in China about 500 years ago. Ancient characters called seal script, more than two thousand years old, are carved into pieces of soft stone or wood, pressed onto paper with red seal paste, and the impression is appreciated.
