About this place
Izumi Fumoto is a townscape preservation district in Fumotomachi, Izumi, Kagoshima Prefecture. It is a group of samurai residences that the Satsuma Domain used as a defense base, made up of streets between stone walls of piled round stones and tall hedges. The hilly land was leveled and laid out in orderly blocks, with the road parts dug in so that the samurai residence parts are higher. The sites of the samurai residences are surrounded by stone walls of piled round stones and tall hedges. Besides being the living base of samurai, they also served as defense bases.
