About this place

Chin Jukan / Sim Su-gwan is the hereditary name of a Satsuma-yaki ceramic artist. The present head is the 15th. The kiln is in Miyama (formerly Nawashirogawa), Higashiichikicho, Hioki, Kagoshima Prefecture. This entry also describes the history of the Chin family as descendants of potters living in Satsuma before the head took the name "Chin Jukan." Belonging to the Nawashirogawa line of Satsuma-yaki (Nawashirogawa-yaki), the name has been taken by the heads from the Meiji period onward (from the 12th head) of the Chin family, descendants of the first head, Chin Tokichi.
