About this place
The Tojo system was a system of local rule carried out by the Satsuma Domain (Kagoshima Domain). In 1784 (Tenmei 4), this name was changed to go. The Satsuma Domain had a very large number of samurai compared with other domains, with samurai making up 26% of the population as of 1871 (Meiji 4). So it divided its territory, settled samurai at each base within the divisions in order to disperse them, and made them part of a military network. It also used them as bases for ruling farming, mountain and fishing villages and market towns.
