About this place
The former Hosokawa Gyobu Residence is a samurai residence on the site of the Sannomaru of Kumamoto Castle in Chuo Ward, Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is designated an Important Cultural Property building of Kumamoto Prefecture. The Hosokawa Gyobu family (also called Koikai Hosokawa), along with the Hosokawa Naizen family (Sunadori Hosokawa), was a family of retainers of the Hosokawa clan's collateral line (both bore the Nagaoka surname in the Edo period). This residence is the lower residence built in what is now Higashikoikaimachi, Chuo Ward, Kumamoto, after Hosokawa Okitaka, younger brother of Hosokawa Tadatoshi, who became lord of the Kumamoto Domain, founded the Gyobu family.
