About this place
Shimada Museum of Art is an art museum in Shimazaki, Nishi Ward, Kumamoto, Kumamoto Prefecture. It is known for collecting and exhibiting the calligraphy and belongings of the master swordsman Miyamoto Musashi. It opened in September 1977 (Showa 52). It collects and exhibits mainly old art gathered by Shimada Matomi, managing director of the Kumamoto Castle Honor Society and president of the Musashi Society. The collection consists mainly of paintings and calligraphy from the end of the medieval period through the early modern period, weapons, armor, and crafts such as furnishings.
