About this place
Shohinken is the residence and garden of the Matsui family, chief retainers of the Hosokawa clan of the Higo Kumamoto Domain and keepers of Yatsushiro Castle, in Kitanomarumachi, Yatsushiro, Kumamoto Prefecture. Another name: Hama no Chaya. It is designated a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan. The designated name as a place of scenic beauty is the Former Kumamoto Domain Yatsushiro Castle Lord's Hama Ochaya (Shohinken) Garden. The building is a Yatsushiro City Designated Tangible Cultural Property. It is a tea house built in 1688 (1st year of Genroku) on the former site of the Obaku-school Jifukuji by Matsui Naoyuki, 3rd head of the Matsui family, for his birth mother, the nun Sushoin, and is located about 300 m northwest of Yatsushiro Castle.
