Overview
Shrines and castles built from paper and paste alone - hollow, frameless, and light enough to dance with on the head.
About this place
The Yamaga Lantern Festival is a festival of Omiya Shrine in Yamaga Onsen, Yamaga, Kumamoto Prefecture, and its events are held every year from August 15 to 17. To the melody of the folk song "Yoheho-bushi," women in yukata walk and dance through the city with gold lanterns (kana-toro) made of gold and silver washi paper on their heads. Along with the autumn grand festival of Fujisaki Hachimangu in Kumamoto and the Myoken Festival of Yatsushiro Shrine in Yatsushiro, it is counted as one of the annual events representing Kumamoto Prefecture.
