About this place
The Jotenkaku Museum is an art museum within the grounds of Shokokuji in Kamigyo Ward, Kyoto, Kyoto Prefecture. It opened in 1984 as part of the project to mark the 600th anniversary of the founding of Shokokuji. It houses and exhibits cultural properties such as calligraphy, paintings and crafts owned by Shokokuji and by Rokuonji (Kinkakuji) and Jishoji (Ginkakuji), which belong to the Shokokuji branch of Rinzai Zen (including two National Treasures (five items) and many Important Cultural Properties of Japan). In 2004 about 200 works of art, including National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties, were donated by the Manno Museum (Osaka), which closed that year.
