Overview
The only tea room reliably by Sen no Rikyu: two mats, and the first entrance so low that everyone must stoop.
About this place
Myokian is a Buddhist temple in Oyamazaki, Otokuni District, Kyoto Prefecture. Its mountain name is Hokozan. It is also called Myoki Zen-an. Its other name is "Taian." It is Japan's oldest tea-house building and is said to be the perfected form of the soan (thatched hermitage) tea room. In the Edo period it was for a time a sub-temple of Jizoji, but it now belongs to the Tofukuji branch of Rinzai Zen. It was founded in the Meio era of the Muromachi period (1492-1501). The founder was Shungaku Shiho, a Dharma heir of Shoichi Kokushi, founder of Tofukuji. It is known for the National Treasure tea room "Taian."
