Overview
Striped cotton that swept Edo: sober enough to slip past sumptuary law, but luxurious in the quality of its thread.
About this place
Matsusaka momen is cotton cloth produced around Matsusaka, Mie Prefecture. Its dyeing method is basically indigo dyeing, and it is characterised by stripe patterns in various shades of indigo. It is a traditional craft designated by Mie Prefecture. In the Edo period it was called Ise momen or Seishu momen, and was so popular that it sold over 500,000 bolts a year in Edo, which had a population said to be one million. Among Ise momen, striped ones were prized as "Matsuzaka stripes." The roots of Matsusaka stripes are said to be the "ryujofu" woven in Giao Chi, in Annam.
