A kilometre of rock terraces cut by waves and lifted by earthquakes - a colonnade made without a hand.
About this place
Onigajo is a scenic coastal spot in Kimoto-cho, Kumano, Mie Prefecture. It is part of a Place of Scenic Beauty of Japan ("Onigajo and Shishiiwa of Kumano"). Numerous sea caves of various sizes carved by the rough waves of Kumano-nada, uplifted by earthquakes, line up like steps, continuing for about 1.2 km facing Kumano-nada. It is the southernmost point of the ria coast that runs from the Shima Peninsula, and south of it the coast changes to a gentle sandy beach (Shichiri Mihama).
