About this place
Ganshoin is a temple of the Soto school in Kariyada, Obuse, Kamitakai District, Nagano Prefecture. Its mountain name is Baidozan. The principal image is Shakyamuni Nyorai. It has Katsushika Hokusai's Eight-Direction Glaring Phoenix painting and is also a temple associated with Kobayashi Issa. According to temple tradition it was founded in 1430 (2nd year of Eikyo) as the Pure Land Sensorin Nenbutsuji; in 1472 (4th year of Bunmei) it was founded by Ogino Bingo-no-kami Tsunetomo, lord of Kariyada Castle, with Zen master Futaku Genkei as first abbot. It is the family temple of Fukushima Masanori, who was dispossessed in 1619 (5th year of Genna) by the Takaino Domain of Shinano Province on the grounds of unauthorized reconstruction of Hiroshima Castle, and a mausoleum stands within the grounds.
