Overview
Iron-rich local earth in the ground coat makes it exceptionally tough; it grew as souvenirs for travellers on the highway.
About this place
Kiso lacquerware is lacquerware made in Kiso-Hirasawa, Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture (the former Hirasawa, Narakawa Village, Kiso District), and the surrounding area. Some lacquerware that descends from it is called Yasawa lacquerware. On 17 February 1975 it was designated a Traditional Craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (then the Ministry of International Trade and Industry). Kiso-Hirasawa, the central production area, was selected as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings in 2006, and the Kiso Lacquerware Festival is held every June.
