About this place
The Takato stonemasons were a group of stonemasons from Takato in Shinano Province (now Takato, Ina, Nagano Prefecture). A document of origin has been handed down saying that in 1187 (3rd year of Bunji), the Takato stonemasons received permission from Minamoto no Yoritomo to work as stone craftsmen throughout Japan for generations, but their origin is estimated to be around the medieval period. Based on this tradition, they traveled all over the country, working on journeys from what is now Aomori Prefecture to Yamaguchi Prefecture.
