About this place
Gojo Shinmachi is the name of an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings around Gojo Shinmachi-dori (Ise Kaido) in Gojo, Nara Prefecture. The district originated as a castle town: in 1608 (Keicho 13), Matsukura Shigemasa, a retainer of the Tsutsui clan, was enfeoffed as lord of Futami Castle and ruled Gojo and Sue, and developed as a town the Shinmachi Village that had formed between Gojo and Futami. Shinmachi Village consisted of East, Middle and West towns, and in 1623 (Genna 9) it had about 95 houses, with a townscape little different from the present about 110 houses.
