About this place
Naramachi is an area with a historic townscape in the southeastern part of the central urban area of Nara, Nara Prefecture. Many townhouses dating from the Edo period onward line its narrow streets. When written "Nara-machi" in kanji, it refers to Naramachi plus the areas of "Nara Kita-machi," "Takabatake" and "Kyobate-Kidera." "Naramachi" refers to the part of "Nara-machi" south of National Route 369. Of these, 49.3 hectares centred on the former precincts of Gangoji have been designated by Nara as the Nara-machi Urban Landscape Formation District.
