Overview
Ramie cloth whitened by water and sun alone, supplied to the shogunate for priests' and samurai dress.
About this place
Jofu is a fine linen cloth made by plain-weaving thin hemp thread (hemp and ramie). In the past it was presented and paid as tribute to the shogunate and others. It often has stripe or kasuri patterns and is used for summer kimono. The softness most suited to clothing is that of bleached hemp (taima), and bleached ramie does not become as soft as bleached hemp. There have always been cloths that use the beauty of sheerness; in ancient times, in the Heian period, the "mushi no tarekinu" was a thin cloth of ramie used on the hats of upper-class women of the Heian period, and is also said to have hidden the face.
