About this place
Shorinji is a temple of the Shingon school, Muroji branch, in Sakurai, Nara Prefecture. Its mountain name is Ryoonzan. The principal image is Jizo Bosatsu. The founder is said to be Joe. It is known for holding a National Treasure standing Eleven-Headed Kannon statue. Shorinji stands on a small hill south of the Sakurai city area, overlooking the Nara Basin to the north. Tradition says that in 712 (5th year of Wado) it was founded as Henjoin, a subtemple of Tonomine Myorakuji (now Tanzan Shrine), by Joe, the eldest son of Fujiwara no Kamatari.
