About this place
Matsuyama is a wide-area place name in the Ouda area of Uda, Nara Prefecture. It was formerly Matsuyama Town, Uda District. Also called Uda Matsuyama. In the Edo period it flourished as the jinya town of the Uda Matsuyama Domain, and part of it is now selected as a National Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. This entry also explains that preservation district. The district west of Uda Matsuyama Castle was in ancient times a court hunting ground called Akino. The present street layout originates in the castle town of Akiyama Castle, built in the Sengoku period by the local lord Akiyama clan.
