Overview
Five centuries of planted forest, grown dense and slow so the rings stay fine - the timber that lines sake barrels.
About this place
Yoshino forestry is forestry carried out in the upper reaches of the Yoshino River (Kino River) in the central-south of Nara Prefecture (mainly Kawakami Village, Higashiyoshino Village and Kurotaki Village). It has long been regarded as the model for forestry throughout Japan. It is famous as the production area of Yoshino cedar. It is characterized by ultra-dense planting of 8,000 to 10,000 trees per hectare. Afterward, light thinning is repeated many times, and it has been carried out as long-rotation work. Timber from this region is highly valued as lumber because of its narrow growth rings, straight full trunks, absence of knots and good color.
