Overview
Made only along this one river: cooking pots whose rims erupt into flame-like projections.
About this place
Flame-style pottery is a type of Jomon pottery of the middle Jomon period with a shape as if modeled on rising flames. It is known for being found in concentration mainly in the Shinano River basin of Niigata Prefecture. Most flame-style pottery is deep-bowl pottery. The body is decorated with applied clay strips in S-shaped or spiral patterns, and the rope-impressed decoration made by pressing and rolling a cord is rarely seen. The upper part in principle has four large handles and shows a complex shape with clay-strip decoration, and the rim is shaped like saw teeth.
