Carved wood layered with a dozen coats of lacquer and matted down; use wears the surface until the red shows through.
About this place
Murakami Kibori Tsuishu is lacquerware made in Murakami, Niigata Prefecture. It was designated a Niigata Prefecture cultural property in 1955 and a traditional craft by the Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry in 1976. From the Bun'an era of the Muromachi period, temples such as Koun-ji and Ryuko-ji were built around this area. Carpenters and craftsmen who had come from Kyoto joined that work, which is said to be the origin of this lacquerware. Temple building flourished when Murakami Yorikatsu was the domain lord.
