About this place
Nuttari (also written another way and read Nutari) is a place name at the eastern end of the central part of Chuo Ward, Niigata, Niigata Prefecture. The modern reading is "Nuttari." The Nutari Fence, thought to be the forerunner of Nuttari, first appears in history in the entry for the end of the year in the Nihon Shoki, compiled in 647, which states that the Yamato court established the Nutari Fence as a fortress marking the northern limit, militarily and administratively, against the Emishi.
